Hello parents!

Welcome back! And to my fellow kindergarten parents, welcome to Thurgood Marshall Elementary School!

I am a parent volunteer and your PTA president for the 2022-2023 school year. My son is in kindergarten and my daughter is in 5th grade. One of the many things that makes our school GREAT is the amazing community of parents who volunteer their time, talents and resources to create a fun, supportive and memorable school experience for our kids. Social events, community support, teacher appreciation initiatives, cultural assemblies, school spirit and so much more… is all possible because of the PTA. In addition, we represent TMES at the Montgomery County Council of PTA where they share valuable information and vote on impactful issues in MCPS.

The TMES PTA Executive Board has been working all summer to make way for an exciting, “normal” school year. Here are a few things we have been up to:

  • Onboarded new officers

  • Published a new website (www.tmespta.org

  • Spread the word about Kindergarten registration to increase enrollment

  • Supported our community with 4 Season Giving and Comfort Cases to distribute backpacks and school supplies

  • Developed a draft budget for the new school year

  • Hosted a teacher appreciation breakfast on August 25

  • Planned Boo-Hoo breakfast for the first day of school

  • Planned Ice Cream social for September 22 (we need volunteers for this event!)

  • Met with Mrs. Nazzaro and Ms. Harrison to provide mutual support

That being said, our work has just begun. We would love for you to join us. We need your support — and your ideas — at all levels to make these activities possible and welcome to our whole community. We need general volunteers to do quick tasks or help at events, and leaders to chair events, initiatives, and potentially join our board. You can join through our website or by stopping to see us at Back-to-School night on September 15 or the Ice Cream Social on September 22.

Thank you so much for your support! I look forward to a successful school year!

Sincerely,

Erica Tappis
